Summary: |
Classroom acoustics, including but not limited to noise, echoes, and reverberation, significantly impact student’s ability to understand the speech signal and thus affect learning. In the short term, we would like one classroom teacher per grade level (k-5) to be using an FM system during all aspects of the school day. Long term, if we increase student’s access to curriculum and social information, student’s will have an easier time comprehending information and the daily vocal strain on the teacher will decrease. Literature review supports that increased signal to noise ratio in classrooms has improved student learning and daily performance as well as standardized test achievement (see attached articles). In order to implement this project, we will organize a training of the classroom teachers and support staff on the use and benefits of the sound field system. We would be using the latest technology to reduce noise and improve student learning experience. Collaboration will occur between the Speech-language staff and general education staff to benefit all students within selected classrooms. The use of FM systems currently occurring in McCall middle school and could easily be reproduced in other schools and classrooms. We will provide in-services to classrooms involved as well as any other staff or parent who desires further information and/or trainings. Project will begin as soon as the items are available. Expected target date would be no later than September 2013. The success of the project will be evaluated by teacher and student survey. |
