Summary: |
Winchester Public Schools has made an intentional effort in addressing the social-emotional well-being of all students in recent years. This is evidenced by the hiring of a Social Emotional Learning educator to work with the elementary school teachers, and the implementation of morning mindfulness time during homeroom time at McCall Middle School. However, several high school students have identified that the high school lacks a physical space for students to retreat to where they can take ownership of their own social-emotional well-being, a place to reflect and practice mindfulness. Under the encouragement and guidance of French teacher Eileen Milner and myself, concerned high school students in the Zen Garden Club have explored the tradition of gardens as a place of reflection, selected a Zen-inspired design as most conducive to addressing their vision of providing a quiet and reflective space for students, have met with members of the community to gather information and expertise on appropriate designs, and begun fund-raising; this work demonstrates their passion for the project. We are excited about this project because not only does it align with the beacons of WPS Vision for Learning, but it is totally driven by student commitment for making this needed space a reality. |
