Summary: |
Classroom acoustics, including but not limited to noise, echoes, and reverberation, significantly impact student’s ability to understand the speech signal and thus affect learning. We have had significant success with the current use of the systems purchased last year by WFEE with support from students and teachers alike. We would like to provide more sound field systems for each grade level as they increase students' access to curriculum and social information. Students have an increased noise-signal ratio and all students are more able to access the teacher's voice. It also reduces daily voice strain for teachers. Literature review supports that increased signal to noise ratio in classrooms has improved student learning and daily performance as well as standardized test achievement (see attached articles). Again, in order to implement this project, we will organize a training of the classroom teachers and support staff on the use and benefits of the sound field systems. Collaboration will occur between the Speech-language staff and general education staff to benefit all students within selected classrooms. The use of FM systems currently occurring in McCall middle school could easily be reproduced in other schools and classrooms. We will provide in-services to classrooms involved as well as any other staff or parent who desires further information and/or trainings. Project will begin in September 2013 and success will be measured by teacher and student feedback. |
