| Summary: | After dealing with the challenges of a pandemic for more than 2 years, the APA recently reported that “mental illness and the demand for psychological services are at all-time highs—¬especially among children.” As classroom teachers, and with that in mind, we are constantly looking for ways to best support our students’ emotional well-being.
In our third grade room this year, we spent a great amount of time working on lessons to support students and their feelings. We had daily Morning Meetings, weekly lessons with Andrea Thurk (our school psychologist), and incorporated RULER lessons/strategies into nearly every element of our day.
With that being said, one thing that kept coming up was trying to create a “calming corner” in our room, where kids could go to take a moment. With Covid limitations, we ended up setting up two desks in the hall, which while it often worked for students, was not necessarily a space that was warm, stabilizing, or filled with resources for students to use.
As we look forward to the 2022-2023 school year, we are writing this WFEE grant in hopes of purchasing the supplies necessary to create a safe, calming space within our classroom for students to help regulate their feelings and regain a sense of calm.
