D., owner of Architects for Learning will provide a one full day workshop and three required 2.5 hour follow-up workshops that will explore how executive functions and self-regulatory systems influence listening, speaking, reading, writing, and learning across all grade levels. We will discuss how strategy based instruction supports the development of skills that are central to language development and academic success, focusing specifically on how graphics can be used to strengthen language, learning, and critical thinking. These workshops are designed to facilitate fidelity of implementation and deepen instructional practices. Brain Frames® will be presented. Brain Frames are a collection of six visual-spatial displays of language and thought. They represent (graphically) fundamental patterns that underlie listening, speaking, reading, writing, thinking, and problem solving. Literally, they allow teachers and students to “frame” what is in their minds within a visual pattern. This allows them to store their ideas on paper so they can decide what they want to convey. Students’ choice of Brain Frame is dictated by what they are setting out to do: tell about something, compare and/or contrast two ideas, convey a sequence of events, show relationships and connections, consider causes and/or effects of an event, or categorize information.
