Part II: Grant proposal
 
Summary: I have been invited by the International Reading Association to attend and present at the 22nd World Congress on Reading (July 28 – 31, 2008) in Costa Rica. The theme of this year’s Congress is “Reading in a Diverse World”. My presentation will focus on the work I have done at Winchester High School using Service Learning and the “Book Brunch” program as a way to engage students in real life application of the skills they learn in the reading classroom. I will also have an opportunity to attend and learn from a variety of presentations by world renowned teachers, teacher educators, administrators, researchers, policymakers, and others involved in literacy education. I will bring back ideas and proven strategies to strengthen literacy education for adolescents at Winchester High School.
