Part I. Applicant and Project Information

Title of project: Improving Student Access to Good Books That They Can and Want to
Project manager: Susan Harney
School: Lynch
Curriculum: Reading writing

Part II: Grant proposal

Summary: It has been shown repeatedly in the research that many children have little or no opportunities to truly engage in reading interesting books at their independent reading level. Therefore they do not read and do not become readers. This grant would provide a supply of high interest books at students' independent reading levels. The books will be for the students to take home and read and enjoy on their own. Teachers struggle to provide students with these highly engaging books that they need to become more successful at reading. Parents also report difficulty finding just right books that their children can and want to read. This grant would provide a rich supply of carefully selected texts specifically for this purpose. Teachers would introduce the books to the students, engage them in conversations about the books, as well as provide a format for students to record the books they have read, building a sense of accomplishment as students see their reading lists grow. The result will be increased confidence as well as engagement in reading. The target audience for the grant is students reading below grade level. However, the presence of the collection and its frequent use will increase the amount of conversation about books and enthusiasm for reading and talking about books throughout the school and will have a positive impact on all the children.
