Summary: |
For the past three years, my classroom has served as the “sister school” to a school in the Dominican Republic known as Los Ninos de Leonardo y Meredith. To foster this special relationship, I have incorporated many projects into the classroom intended to enhance my students’ knowledge of the Dominican Republic, and teach them about civic service. During April vacation of 2010, I will be traveling to the Dominican Republic to finally become personally acquainted with the school. I will meet the 15 students, the two teachers, and the cook. I will observe a typical school day, walk inside the small two-room school house, and be able to personally talk to the children with whom my class corresponds and for whom we help raise tuition money. I will bring letters from my students and return with letters from Los Ninos. I will teach a short poetry class and help them write the page for the class book we will sell as a fundraiser. I will have the chance to visit the homes of some of the students, and experience the Dominican culture. I will record my visit through video and film and return to Winchester to share my experience with the 4th graders. |
