Curriculum: Reading writing

Part II: Grant proposal

Summary: In 2009, WFEE generously supported the Lynch Elementary School library with a grant to purchase Playaway titles. The Playaway is a self-contained digital audiobook similar in size to an ipod. Small and compact at just 6 oz., the Playaway eliminates the need for walkmans, CD players and the like. The child borrowing this device does not need additional equipment at home to play the “book”, except for a pair of earbuds or headphones, which are offered along with the unit if needed. This unit can also be plugged into portable speakers so that an entire class can take part in listening. According to the teachers at Lynch Elementary School, the Playaways have become an invaluable resource for many of their students, namely struggling and reluctant readers and English Language Learners (ELLs). Teachers report that reading engagement has improved since students are now able to access high-interest books that they might not be able to read independently. Given the success of these Playaways, teachers and students have asked for multiple copies of current titles as well as new titles. In addition, parents of reluctant readers have repeatedly expressed interest in getting high-interest books into their children’s hands. In order to meet the needs of struggling and reluctant readers, as well as ELLs, and to fulfill the request of teachers and parents, we are requesting a total of $2,000 to augment our existing Playaway collection in the Lynch library.
