Applicant and Project Information   Title of project: Exploration of Color on Metal Project manager: Laurie Schmidt School: McCall Curriculum: Art   Part II: Grant proposal   Summary: I would like to attend a two week workshop on Copper Enameling (a time honored metal working technique) that would give me the tools and information necessary to introduce metal working as an important three dimensional art form in my 7th and 8th grade McCall art classes. Participation in this workshop program, taking place at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (in Deer Isle, ME.), offers an opportunity to increase my familiarity with metal as an expressive medium that I could use with middle level students. Over the years, I have taken numerous courses in basic metal fabrication techniques at the Mass. College of Art, in Boston. Currently, I introduce some students to wire working and simple copper foil projects. I am interested in expanding my repertoire of skills, in order to be prepared to help my students with more complex concepts and goals in the metal projects that they undertake. I am not very familiar with copper enameling as an art form, and realize that this is a “do-able” process that many students could participate in here in the McCall art studio. I would also like to share my knowledge and experience in the workshop with my McCall art dept. colleague, Haining Wang (who is also interested in introducing the art form in her own McCall art classes). The Haystack Mountain School of Crafts offers exceptional opportunities for qualified learners in a wide range of craft media. Faculty and staff of this summer educational collaborative are world renowned artists and artisans who share their knowledge, skill, and passion generously with their students. It would be an honor to learn from such committed instructors. During the month of July this summer (’09), I would like to travel to Maine, to learn among a group of highly committed participants at the Haystack School.
