Summary: |
Assessment continues to drive instruction in all curriculum areas at Vinson Owen School. Although varying types of assessment take place within the academic day, there is always a time allotment needed to score and correct assessments so that teachers may re-teach concepts and skills within a specific time period. The latest innovation in assessment has been the “Instant Response Systems” formally known as Senteo Clickers. .( Personal response systems (PRS), are handheld radio-frequency response devices that allow anonymous and specific polling and question-and-answer sessions in the classroom. The device transmits student responses to a receiver attached to an instructor's computer. The results can be displayed to the students or kept private.
These clickers enable teachers to instantly assess concepts being taught. Utilizing Senteo Clickers, the time that is taken to manually assess skills can be more efficiently spent re-teaching concepts – an important improvement if the instant response systems were in place at Vinson Owen School. The teachers at Vinson Owen have utilized “Smart Boards” for the last 5 years. Smart board lessons have been created and utilized in all curriculum areas so that students may actively engage in learning in a “hands on” “interactive way.” Through the use of the interactive response systems, teachers will be able to assess understanding of these smart board lessons in a far more efficient and less time-consuming way and thus have a greater chance of achieving mastery learning for students within all curriculum areas.
