Part I. Applicant and Project Information

Title of project: Technology in the Mathematics Classroom
Project manager: Kathleen Grace
School: High School
Curriculum: Mathematics

Part II: Grant proposal

Summary: Students today have grown up with technology embedded in their daily lives. With the McCall and WHS move to BYOD, students have access to technology in the classroom every day. How we use technology in the math classroom must reflect this reality. Technology should be used as an effective tool to support teaching and learning. Through a series of summer workshops, middle and high school teachers will have the time to learn about new technologies, use these technologies and then integrate these tools into a lesson that they create. Thus using technology to engage students in tasks that help them in their understanding of mathematics and the importance of mathematics in their lives. In the workshops, teachers will get hands on experience using Ozobots, Birdbrain Finch, sensors, coding using Scratch and Python, binary and function understanding through Turing Tumble, graphing tools using Desmos. Many of these items we already have. We are looking to get more robots, possibly some handheld drones, and the Turing Tumble games.
