Part II: Grant proposal |
|
Summary: |
We propose to invite Brian Milaukus of KidStock Theater to work with kindergarten students and their teachers (classroom, art, music, and reading) to develop a stage show using familiar nursery rhymes that can be performed in front of an audience. Work will include designing a simple set and props, making appropriate costumes, choral reading of nursery rhymes, and helping kindergarteners learn to speak clearly and slowly in front of an audience. Particular attention will be paid to the specific content and vocabulary so that our students comprehend the meaning of these traditional American nursery rhymes. In addition, students will learn to emphasize the rhyming words and the meaning of each verse when they recite nursery rhymes and poetry. Children will develop a stronger sense of self-confidence and an appreciation for live theater.
Brian will conduct three sessions with each class of kindergarten students and during these half hour sessions he will, with the Muraco teachers, help the kindergarten students learn nursery rhymes which they will perform on stage. Each K child will have a role in one nursery rhyme and children will work together to make props, learn their lines, and practice their performance.
This collaborative work with Brian Milaukus will enable the Muraco staff to learn effective ways to incorporate drama, rhyme, and performance into the K curriculum. Future classes will be able to use the materials created through the generosity of this grant and teachers will continue to use dramamtic arts in the K classroom in subsequent years.
