Part I. Applicant and Project Information

Title of project: Learning with Lego Robotics
Project manager: Kristen Shanahan
School: Vinson-Owen
Curriculum: Art

Part II: Grant proposal

Summary: Robotics is an effective way for teachers to cover important curriculum areas in a fun and engaging way. Utilizing the Lego Education School Solutions, such as Lego Education We Do for Grade 2 and Lego Mind Storms for Grade 5, we will cover a wide range of curriculum targets within science, technology, engineering and math in a fun, hands on, and engaging way. This grant is a collaborative working with Grade 2, Grade 5 and with the technology specialist. It is our hope that having the 2nd graders challenged in engineering and computer programming will make them excited and more literate for the grade 5 robotics program. We also feel that the 5th graders could mentor and share their designs with the second grade population. This multiage collaboration would have many benefits. This initiative is unique in that it is a robotics program implemented in school and will service all Vinson Owen 2nd and 5th graders, and could possibly serve as a pilot for the district. We believe that these improved materials will not only help us to more adequately cover the state science/technology frameworks, but also will change what the children are capable of learning. The teachers involved with this initiative believe in it so much that we have been trained through Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach. We have set up partnership this year with the Tufts University's STOMP Program. This program is a student teacher outreach mentorship program which has Tufts students come and work with our student population. Currently two young ladies from the program are working with our 5th graders leading us in fantastic activities using Lego Robotics.
