Summary: |
One of the Winchester High School Improvement goals for the 2008-09 school year is to improve the climate in the school community. The School Improvement Council is focusing on this goal in their work this year. The School Improvement Council has focused their efforts in terms of strengthening student leadership and character development in the student body. To this end the council initiated a leadership development training program during the 2008-09 school year (generously funded by WFEE) in consultation with Tabitha May-Tolub, a youth development consultant (TMT Consulting) who has experience working at other middle and high schools. She provides leadership training for high schools with the goal of:
• Building community among students from different ages and groups
• Building connections between students and adult staff members.
• Reinforcing the mission and vision of the school
• Allowing students to have a voice related to decisions about school policies and climate.
TMT Consulting provided two types of trainings for students this year (funded by a WFEE grant). The first, called Climate Control Challenge was designed for 60-100 students. Students move through a three part process to open them up to the problems and possibilities that exist in the school. The group takes the first steps in creating a school environment where all students feel safe and connected to the school. This training took place twice during the 2008-09 school year for approximately 130 students.
The second training called Leadership Development Intensive was a three day training designed for 24 students who had experienced the first training. The students addressed school climate issues, acquired leadership skills, and learned how to take new knowledge and skills to the entire school community. At the end of this training, they were ready to implement school change immediately.
These 24 students were also be trained to do the Climate Control Challenge with another large group of students, spreading the leadership and character development training to a large body of the school. During 2008-09, 24 students were trained and facilitated the two Climate Control workshops. Our goal would be to continue this leadership training on a continuous basis, with the training done by our trained student leaders. Our goal would be to have another 24 students do the leadership intensive in 2009-2010 and provide 2-3 more climate control trainings for 130-200 students.
