Summary: |
Engineering is Elementary is a project offered by the Boston Museum of Science to introduce teachers to engineering concepts and skills. This program recognizes the gender and cultural gaps in the engineering field and directly, but subtlety addresses these issues through the use of story. Each module of the program starts with a story that introduces a child who solves a real world problem. Then, students are given a design challenge similar to the one the child in the story faced. Through applying the engineering design process, students collaboratively create solutions to the problem. Originality and creativity are emphasized, as well as practicality. The fifth grade teachers at Muraco school are excited to have the opportunity to participate in a program that supports and challenges all students. It will enhance our teaching practice and create opportunities to empower our students to identify and solve real world problems. |
