Part I. Applicant and Project Information

Title of project: McCall Coding Club Micro:bit Project
Project manager: Dee Ezzio
School: McCall
Curriculum: Other

Part II: Grant proposal

Summary: The micro:bit is designed specifically for kids and beginners, and is a pocket-sized computer that you can code. It’s a great introduction to programming hardware. We are hoping to order a pack of 10 that would each be distributed to members of the Coding Club at McCall Middle School. Coding Club has been a club at McCall for several years, and this year is occurring weekly via Zoom, with anywhere from 10-15 students attending every week. A bonus is that the micro:bits are reusable, so students could program them during Coding Club this year and return them at the end of the year, so that students could use them again next year and in the years to come. The idea to program hardware came from the students in the club, so they are all incredibly interested. It is also exciting that we have 3 members of the high school who have been participating and acting as teachers and mentors to the McCall 6th, 7th, and 8th graders during Coding Club, and the high schoolers would be leading the micro:bit lessons and teaching the students to program the hardware (with support and monitoring from the adult leading the club), which supports collaboration and peer-to-peer learning.
