Part I. Applicant and Project Information

Title of project: Integrating Technology In Special Education
Project manager: Matthew James
School: High School
Curriculum: Special education

Part II: Grant proposal

Summary: The purpose of this project is to increase the availability of technology to students with disabilities that will increase academic achievement, develop competitive workplace and college level communication skills and enhance independence in daily living tasks. Winchester High School is actively promoting inclusive best practice for students with disabilities to increase accessibility to all academic and nonacademic environments. Personal use of assistive technology and proficiency with digital resources is not only part of our youth culture but necessary to competitive employment and college success. IPADS, talking calculators and dictionaries, screen readers and voice recognition devices and programs offer extraordinary, age appropriate, mobile compensatory tools for academic performance, employment and social networking. Additionally students with communication, cognitive and language based disabilities can independently access software and disability specific applications that reduce dependence on others for help or direction. At present Winchester High School’s capacity to meet the technology needs of students is limited and there is not enough equipment to promote consistent use across home school and workplace environments. Funding will be used to acquire additional technology that is available and appropriate to meet each student’s disability related needs as they move from school to adult living.
