Curriculum: Social studies

Part II: Grant proposal

Summary: Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are helping teachers engage students in unique learning experiences to create full-immersion and fun classrooms. In AR, digital objects are superimposed in real-life scenes on a smartphone or tablet. VR creates an entire virtual world that fully surrounds the viewer also using a smartphone or tablet by allowing an experience in 360 degrees. In 2018, Techradar.com reported that using VR in the classroom can “absolutely transform education altogether, largely by making education much more immersive for students – which could help make lessons more interesting.” In respect to history and world language, VR can help students “learn about a new country by seemingly visiting one.” Techlearninguniversity.com reports that the “value of VR comes when it is embedded strategically in a curriculum, encouraging students to learn and solve problems in experiential ways. VR offers professors the ability to extend the classroom and augment the learning experience.” The McCall Social Studies teachers and World Language teachers are excited to collaborate with Pat DeVries (Technology Coach) and Kim Burke (Instructional Coach) to expand the walls of McCall through embedded curriculum. Brain research tells us that humans learn best through the kinesthetics of interaction and experience. We would like to bring our studies of the world to life for our students. By purchasing a class set of VR glasses, we will enable our students to use their phones to virtually tour the world! Student learning from textbooks and smartboards are all two-dimensional. Computer-simulated environments are exciting because they will enable students to consume theoretical knowledge and then produce products using 21st Century skills. This combination will help abstract concepts become much more concrete to our students.
