Part I. Applicant and Project Information

Title of project: GREENHOUSE PROJECT
Project manager: LANIE HIGGINS
School: McCall
Curriculum: Science

Part II: Grant proposal

Summary: The idea of placing a greenhouse at McCall developed from discussion in an eighth grade class. The students called it the Gardenhouse Project since they envision it as an indoor vegetable garden. Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce and herbs are included on the students’ list. An interesting historical point is that in the 1960’s, McCall was a high school that included a greenhouse in the exact same spot. Once it transitioned to McCall, the greenhouse was eliminated. The mission of the Gardenhouse Project is to engage students in a hands-on community project to encourage a lifelong appreciation for healthy eating and environmental awareness. The students plan to grow vegetables from “seed to salad” as they learn about the challenges and the benefits of growing local produce. The mission is supportive of the Massachusetts Frameworks and McCall’s Health and Wellness policy for promoting healthy eating habits. Our curriculum includes a study of the impact society has on our environment, and its relationship to energy conservation and carbon footprint reduction. The Gardenhouse Project has received support from administration, teachers, Mahoney’s Rocky Ledge, the Department of Public Works, and community members. Mahoney’s will donate seeds and facilitate the transition. Whitson Company will prepare salads for the faculty and students to buy at lunch. Profits will be utilized for the gardenhouse.
