Title of project: Social Skills through Stories and Displays
Project manager: Sarah Casey
School: All primary schools
Curriculum: Literature

Part II: Grant proposal

Summary: The preschool team would like to support their learners’ social, emotional, and behavioral development through the use of social stories and displays. Social stories and displays involve isolating target social situations, events, or routines that a child or group of children needs support in navigating. Social stories and social displays are written as to supplement teachable moments or learning within the moment. They are used to isolate and reinforce once the situation has ended. Social stories and displays can be accessed by children in the classroom with their teachers, peers, or independently. They can also be taken home to share with family members to provide a home to school connection. Social stories and displays can target specific preschool situations, including, but not limited to; sharing, joining peers in play, and using words to problem solve. In a similar manner routines can be targeted; cleaning up, walking in line, and sitting at circle. They are a powerful tool when written for specific situations, events, and routines and when supported with photos and text of the children.
