Summary: |
For half of our team, this is our second year using the Daily 5 and CAFE structure for our reading instruction block, and for the other half of our team, this is our first year with Daily 5 and CAFE. We feel this is an extremely worthwhile way to structure our reading time with students: we teach a whole group mini lesson that focuses on strategies to build reading strength in four major areas (comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary), reading independence is taught and fostered daily, students have multiple opportunities to apply lessons and strategies, we are able to conference individually with students to tailor instruction and monitor progress, and we are able to work with small groups of students on a particular strategy or skill. We are excited to see the progress our students are making in this structure. We would like to continue to build upon that success by adding to our Daily 5 student materials to facilitate organization as suggested by the creators of Daily 5/CAFE and adding to our classroom seating options to create more comfortable classroom libraries that encourage reading.
