Summary: |
Our multi-age level, interdisciplinary team has been meeting for approximately two years to discuss how to incorporate Global Education and the theme of Global Citizenship into Winchester Public Schools. COVID-19 delayed our plans for implementation, but at the same time created a new sense of importance for accomplishing these goals.
How do we encourage our students to be Global Citizens? Now, more than ever, current events issues like climate change, social justice, and global health are in the forefront of our students’ minds, and weigh heavily on many. As a community, we need to educate our students not only about the nature of these challenges, but also foster in them the knowledge and skills needed to be our future change makers who can address these challenges to our society. Our students need to feel connected to people who live near and far, and they need to be empowered with the sense that they can protect the environment and create a sustainable future for themselves and others. How do we get there? By connecting Social Justice Standards, Social Emotional Learning, and Service Learning to promote global education from Pre-K to 12 grade and beyond.
Project Details:
Our goal is to create a K-12 strand that incorporates Global Education and the theme of Global Citizenship in WPS. Global Education will spiral around the 17 Goals for Sustainable Development, as defined by the United Nations. At the Elementary Level, the emphasis will be on defining the meaning of the goals, and applying them on the classroom, school, and local community level as students learn about contemporary global issues and how they can make an impact at home and at school. At the Middle School Level, there will be an expansion of identifying global issues in the classroom, incorporation of Service Learning in some classrooms, and the opportunity for students to earn the Global Citizenship Certificate at 8th grade graduation through extracurricular activities and mentoring. At the High School Level, there will be an deepening of discussion of global issues in the classroom, incorporation of Service Learning in some classrooms, opportunity for WHS students to volunteer to work with elementary students on activities that incorporate Global Citizenship, and the opportunity for students to earn the Global Citizenship Certificate at 12th grade graduation through extracurricular activities and mentoring.
