Summary: |
The earliest school years are the most critical when laying the ground work for good fine motor skill development. In order for children to develop the solid foundation hand skills needed for school work (i.e. writing, coloring, cutting, using classroom tools, manipulating classroom materials and managing personal belongings independently) a well rounded, broad base of experience is needed. The combination of students spending more and more time interacting with technology, video games and television during their leisure time and the increased push for academics and earlier writing skills leaves many (academically challenged and academically gifted students alike) without the fine motor skills they need to show all they know efficiently. All students benefit from exposure and opportunities to engage in tasks that prompt them to use their hands skillfully.
With generous funding from the Winchester Foundation for Excellence, we seek to establish a “Lending Library” of novel, educationally relevant, motivating fine motor activities for all K-2 teachers and specialists to access for their students on a daily basis. These games, tools, toys, and activities will facilitate hand strength and dexterity.
