Part II: Grant proposal

Summary: This professional development is a one-day workshop on teaching the Units of Study in Phonics. It will be led by a senior staff developer from the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, where the Units of Study were developed. We as literacy coaches are very excited about this professional development opportunity because it will provide us with the knowledge we need to properly support teachers who are adding the Lucy Calkins Phonics Program to their curriculum. As you know, all 5 elementary schools are just beginning to use the Lucy Calkins Reading Workshop Units of Study, and now many primary classrooms are also starting to use the Lucy Calkins Phonics Program. The two programs were created to work hand in hand and build on each other. This phonics program is research-based and teaches the phonics skills needed to become proficient readers and spellers; moreover, it presents the phonics concepts in a fun, colorful, playful way for our youngest students, keeping them motivated to learn more. We hope that by building our knowledge of all this program has to offer, we can both support the teachers who are already implementing this phonics program and spread the excitement to other teachers so that more teachers begin to use this program in conjunction with their Reading Workshop lessons. The use of the two programs together will have benefits over time to our elementary students, as they grow into the lifelong lovers of reading that we want them to be.
