Part II: Grant proposal

Summary: As O.T.’s in the public schools we are involved in helping the whole person function at their optimum level - teachers and students alike. For students of all ages and abilities their job is to attend, participate, develop and learn throughout their school day. Our bodies and brains are not built to sit for hour after hour at desks or computers. By taking a quick “break” we can often help our engines or bodies run at their just right level so we can continue to attend and be productive. The purpose of this grant request is to provide teachers with some knowledge and the necessary tools to allow their students to become self aware of their own levels of alertness, learn to alter their own levels of alertness for optimum function and success in the classroom and lastly to supply the classrooms the materials to make this happen . The grant would allow us to help teachers create a space or area in the classroom and make tools available to help children whose bodies “engines” are not running just right. This would allow the OT and the teacher the opportunity to teach the students more about how their brain works and how to assist the children to maintain the proper level of attention and alertness throughout their school day. The teacher could send the student to the “Concentration Station” when their engine is running “too low or too high” with materials to help their engine run “just right”. Equipment such as chair cushions which allow the student to move about in a non-disruptive way while they are seated and in turn power up their attention would be included.
