Summary: |
Our students are ‘digital natives’ having grown up with digital technology. We, as teachers, are the ‘digital immigrants’, learning technology by immersion and adaptation. As we approach new technologies in the classroom, our knowledge and experience teaching essential literacy skills is valuable in helping us critically assess the benefits and drawbacks of a new technology. In this project, four cross-disciplinary teachers at Winchester High will use electronic book readers (Kindles) to explore ways in which this new technology can be used to help students become active readers. During this pilot study of the Kindle in various High School classrooms, the teachers will examine ways in which current best literacy practices can be enhanced or complemented by the Kindle reader. The project will also critically assess any shortcomings of electronic books in a classroom. |
