The National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) is the premier association for Social Studies educators in the United States. With more than 25,000 members, it serves as an umbrella organization for elementary, secondary, and college teachers of history, geography, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and law-related education. The NCSS Annual Conference draws together more than 4,000 peers from across the country and around the world to share he most current knowledge, ideas, research, and expertise in social studies education. This year’s program, themed “Dreams and Deeds: The Civic Mission of Schools,” includes more than 400 sessions, workshops, poster presentations, clinics, tours, speakers and panels, and social events addressing six targeted conference strands: Teaching for Social Justice and Human Rights; The Economy; Citizenship and the Democratic Process; Technology and Mass Media; Community Involvement and Service Learning; and Effective Instructional Strategies. Confirmed speakers for the 2009 NCSS Annual Conference include renowned historian Eric Foner, author and humanitarian Greg Mortenson, and educator Maya Soetoro-Ng. |
