Summary: During collaboration with classroom teachers to develop library collections, the need to help reach kids struggling with their reading skills was discussed. It’s key to have students build decoding skills, or the ability to identify unknown words, when learning to read in order to build reading comprehension. Adding “audio style” books to the collection will help. Reading aloud to children is crucial in their early development and audio books should be considered another form of this activity. Upon investigation, we found a digital audio book product known as the Playaway, a self-contained unit similar in size to an iPod. This unit can also be plugged into portable speakers so that an entire class can take part in listening. We are requesting a total of $5,500, or $1,100 per school, to create an audio library to assist audio learners. Winchester is moving in the right direction to make the 21st century library a reality. Offering differentiated instruction helps all learners, including ELL students and reluctant readers. We want children to leave the frustration factor behind and enjoy reading, leading the way to becoming life-long readers.
