Summary: Authorfest is a well-respected and anticipated tradition in Winchester Schools. Started 16 years ago in the elementary schools, the program was later expanded to the middle school, and in 2003 was made available to the high school as a result of a grant from WFEE. Over the years, Authorfest has hosted over 80 different nationally recognized authors and illustrators. On the day of Authorfest in April 2010, it is planned that approximately eighteen authors/illustrators will visit each of Winchester’s elementary schools giving separate presentations to each grade level from pre-K through grade 5. Three authors will visit MCall Middle School for presentations, and one author will visit the high school. Through the Authorfest program, students will learn about the art of writing and illustrating as the authors/illustrators describe their personal experiences finding inspiration, creating and revising their work, and the process of getting published. These concepts will be reinforced as students progress through the grade levels and see new authors/illustrators each year. At the end of the school day, the authors/illustrators will gather at the Town Hall for a book sale and signing, allowing further opportunities for students and parents to interact with any of the authors/illustrators participating in Authorfest.
