| Summary: |
Breathing LIFE into Informational Reading: A Strategic Exploration of Living Things
In A Place for Wonder, Georgia Heard and Jennifer McDonough discuss how to create "a landscape of wonder," a primary classroom where curiosity, creativity, and exploration are encouraged. For it is these characteristics, the authors write, that develop intelligent, inquiring, life-long learners.
As teachers of reading, we work to create opportunities for growing readers to read engaging, well written, non-fiction text that students are able to decode and comprehend independently. The common core standards have an increased focus on the strategic exploration of the genre of non-fiction. In order to address the common core standards and successfully teach foundational reading behaviors, it is crucial for emerging readers to have access to a wide selection of high-quality, leveled text that promote inquiry and engagement.
To breathe life into the genre of non-fiction, first grade readers at Ambrose will participate in a strategic exploration around the topic of living things. In Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop, students will explore the features of non-fiction text, engage in the research process, and create a written product to demonstrate the depth of their understanding.
