Summary: |
The Post Grad Program (PGP) is a program at Winchester High School designed to help students with acquiring the life and job skills that would help them in their lives after high school. While with the program, these students participate in internships and jobs as part of their preparation for life after school. Therefore, an important aspect of this education is learning the appropriate clothing for internships and jobs. While this has been a recurring lesson in the PGP, we have yet to achieve hands-on experience for the students.
Furthermore, there are students who may not have the finances to afford an internship outfit, so this would be a good opportunity to have an outfit for them for the years they will be with the program.
We are asking WFEE to fund the Post Grad’s Program’s “Dress for Success Project”! This funding would encompass several educational components for the students of the PGP:
1) With staff support, students would use a budget to plan for an outfit including size, work appropriateness, comfort, and estimated costs. This clothing would be worn by the PGP students for their current internships and beyond (i.e., dress pants, collared shirts, dress shoes, etc.).
2) An important, engaging, and hands-on aspect of this project is the act of going to a department store, looking through the clothing aisles, reading sizes, problem-solving if the article of clothing they are looking for is not there, and navigating through trying on clothes and making a purchase.
3) This trip would also encompass travel training as we would take the MBTA Commuter Rail to Target in Woburn, MA. Therefore, students would have to plan out the trip to and from the store, read MBTA travel schedules, research how much the trip would cost, and figure out the amount of time they have to shop before they need to return back to school. They would also need to navigate purchasing round trip train fare.
4) The purchased clothes would be kept at WHS and they would also be part of the daily living skills lessons each week such as clothing care & maintenance including washing, drying, ironing, folding, hanging, etc.
The biggest takeaway about this idea is how many lessons are encompassed in this one project. This one activity would include budgeting, job etiquette, shopping, community navigation, travel training, reading schedules, and clothing care. To name a few! It will also give the students a feeling of success and confidence when walking into their internships.
