Summary: Historic China, East and West is a Primary Source study tour that takes educators to places that ancient traders, travelers, and explorers journeyed through millennia ago. Tour participants will also witness how China is developing into a modern country. The journey begins in Beijing, the city that is China’s capital not only today, but was also the capital at the time of Marco Polo’s visits almost a millennium ago. Here, participants will learn about China's history and culture, as well as the country’s efforts to modernize. The group will also visit the Dandelion School and other educational organizations to meet with leading scholars to discuss China’s history, culture, and modernization. The group will then fly to Dunhuang, a desert oasis on the Silk Route; educators will see the Mogao Grottoes, the famous painted Buddhist caves, and use religion as a case study to analyze the process of cultural diffusion. The tour continues to Xi'an, the eastern end of Silk Road trade and the location of the Terracotta Warrior Museum. The tour then ends at the eastern port city of Shanghai, which for the last two centuries has been at the forefront of connections between China and the West.
