|
Summary: |
The grant would fund some of the start-up costs for a new course (Biotechnology and Ethics) that will introduce students to the principles of biotechnology. The course will offer students the background, as well as working knowledge of, DNA, mRNA, protein expression and many other facets of molecular biology. Students will learn diverse molecular techniques, such as DNA isolation, restriction enzyme digestion, and PCR, as well as the proper and safe use of tools and equipment utilized within biotechnology labs. Furthermore, students will consider and discuss the concepts and controversies pertinent to genetic engineering, scientific and ethical issues, and public concerns related to biotechnology. The major impediment to fully implementing this course is the procurement of specialized plastic ware and reagents. This grant would allow the purchase of such material. |
